Overview

SynCon is a knowledge base system for the Synthesis and Analysis of Arctic Contamination Data. The project was recently selected as the International Thematic Data Center (TDC) for housing terrestrial and freshwater data for the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP).

Throughout modern history, the world has been exposed to environmental contamination. This has generated a great deal of scientific interest as well as public and private concern. Unfortunately, answering questions and making decisions regarding environmental contamination and global climate change are not easy tasks. A spatial knowledge base system called SynCon was developed to help address these problems. The SynCon Project has been selected to serve as the Freshwater/Terrestrial Thematic Data Centre for the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme. In this role, the SynCon Project serves as an international clearinghouse for environmental contamination data, and provides valuable information for scientists, researchers, policy-makers, environmental planners, indigenous peoples and other concerned individuals.
